AUCKLAND REGIONAL PG COMPETITION A SUCCESS
The Auckland Regional Paragliding Competition went off successfully with 27 pilots in total and two valid tasks.From left to right...

WE HAVE A NEW LEADER
You can download the latest version of the New Zealand paragliding ladder here.
Reuben Muir has overtaken Grant Middendorf at the top of the table and Jeff Ripley has climbed into third place.
Glen Stevens, Louis Tapper and Roy Tingay have all entered the Top Ten at the expense of Derek Divers, Mark Hardman and Eva Keim.
Joe Ward has appeared on the table - straight into 11th place!
Glen Stevens has scored the most ladder points (375) so far this season, while Nick Neynens is the biggest climber, moving up 28 places to number 15.
There are now 93 pilots on the ladder, and 52 of them have 277 points or less, so are facing the chop between seasons.
There are two competitions still scheduled this season that will affect this ladder.
AUCKLAND REGIONAL PG COMPETITION
There will be an Auckland Regional Paragliding Competition on the weekend of the 12 and13th of March 2016.The following weekend is the reserve date.
FAI Cat-2 sanction is pending.
Sites will be either Dills, Moirs, Pukemore, Kaimais or Paeroas.
All qualified NZHGPA PG pilots are welcome.

AUCKLAND REGIONAL PARAGLIDING COMPETITION
Although the long distance forecast is not looking great it’s now time to start getting ready.
We have a wonderfully large number of pilots registered for this competition, so below are some pointers to help you get organised.
The decision whether we are on or not, and the likely area will be made at 2000hrs on Thursday 26th November 2015 and this will be posted on the Airtribune website.

The meeting point on the Saturday 28th / Sunday 29th will be either:
- Puhoi Pub – for Auckland area
- TBD – for Pukemore area
- Corner Ngapouri Road – for Paeroas
- Ronnies Café, Matamata – for Kaimais
Meeting time is 10:00 for most pilots, and 09:30 if it’s your first comp or you need explanations or help.
Waypoints
New waypoint files have been created for both Auckland and Paeroa/Kaimais areas, you should download these from either the Airtribune Competition Page or the NZHGPA website.

Maps will be available shortly for download at the same locations.
Unless you have a modern instrument that can hold large numbers of waypoints then you will need to choose which files you upload once the announcement is made as to where the comp will be held.
We STRONGLY recommend practising and doing this in advance of the competition. While help is available in advance – it will be very difficult to provide technical assistance on the weekend itself – so please be ready.
Downloads of IGC files
As usual, we will use Highcloud for scoring.
Please be very familiar with the process of downloading an IGC file from you instrument after your flight.
Again – technical assistance on the weekend itself will be limited so please practise this in advance.
If you have a Flymaster instrument then a computer will be available to assist with downloads, though it’s still better to have your own facility for doing this.
If you have any other type of instrument, particularly Garmin, then the comp organisers expect you to be able to do this yourself. Failure to upload a tracklog after a task results in a zero score.
NZHGPA Membership
Some of those registered for the competition are still not members of the NZHGPA. If you are not a member of the NZHGPA on the weekend of the comp then you will not be allowed to partake (and you shouldn’t actually be flying a paraglider in New Zealand at all). No exceptions.
All wings need to have a valid WOF. All pilots need to have an altimeter, GPS, back protection, reserve parachute and 2-way UHF radio.

| Saturday Task Briefing |
The Auckland Regional Paragliding Competition – The Last Blast, was held at the Paeroas over the weekend.
It was a great turnout, with representation from Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and of course Auckland.
The hang gliders had also been eyeing up the forecast, and joined us for a League of their own.
Saturday’s task was pretty straightforward, taking us up over the back and about 53km south to Rangitaiki.
Jeff Ripley won the day with his 38km flight. Emlyn Revell-Nash put in a notable effort, but was penalised heavily for a couple of indiscretions and ended up losing all his points. Still, he won the coveted ‘Thermal Core-gette’ prize for his struggles. Keep an eye on this guy, I reckon.

Again, Jeff reminded us that he is indeed the Talented Mr Ripley, being first to goal.
Debriefing and prize giving was
done up the road at the Reporoa Pub. Congratulations Jeff, for winning both the
overall comp and the Fun Class trophies!

Kudos went to Mavis and Steve Wright for getting all the
vehicles down from launch, and to Janice for being a super launch marshall.
It was great to see a lot of pilots dipping their toes (or wings?) into the competition scene for the first time. Hope to see you back for more next season.

I know the hangies also had a superb weekend with some great
flights, but no news yet on who won the HG league. I can’t handle the suspense!
AUCKLAND REGIONAL PG COMP - 28 FEB, 1 MAR
So the second attempt at the Auckland Regional competition
was a success! Phew, what a relief.
It wasn’t looking good as we sat on top of Moirs on Saturday
morning waiting for some wind to come up the hill. And especially not after
seeing a couple of pilots head fairly quickly to the bomb-out paddock.
However, Andy Spierer kicked it all into action when he launched and seemed to take an escalator to the clouds.
The task took us over to Dark Summit then to a massive 16km cylinder around Waipu.
Wayne was the day winner, being the only pilot in goal, followed by Anand & Evan, who also made it through the Dome Valley. A smattering of pilots was left along Woodcocks Rd & SH1, trying to avoid the rain that set in later in the afternoon.

It was another slow start, with the sky looking great but nothing happening on launch. A few free-flyers and students weren’t finding anything lifting, and we had a couple of front-runners taking one for the team and bombing down below.
But the time came. Rodger, Robbo, Graham & Andy chanced it, and got up and away. That kicked us all into gear. It was a bit of a grind, but most of us managed to eventually get up and away. No pilots in goal, but some good flights. Joe Ward must get a special mention for climbing up from the bomb-out twice, and getting away on his third flight, well and truly incentivised to stay up.

The drama started when we got to Kaukapakapa pub for a
debrief and to load track logs. Rodger was clearly in the lead, and we were
certain the trophy would go home with him. Until the penalty kicked in for a
minor accidental rule infringement. Ouch!! Graham’s track log was then
scrutinised. Another ouch!! Robbo, who was now in the lead, also appeared to
have a breach! After a bit of forensic analysis of Robbo’s instruments and flight
log, Comp Director Hopper determined that Robbo had in fact stayed within allowed
limits.
That meant Robbo won the day, and was also the overall competition
winner. Way to go, Robbo!
You’re not going to get the trophy past Rodge without a
tussle though!
AUCKLAND REGIONAL PG COMP - 21 & 22 FEBRUARY
The Auckland Regional Paragliding Competition was a ‘go’
last weekend. Comp organiser Johnny Hopper had arranged for it to be FAI Cat 2
approved (something normally only done for the PG Open in NZ) and so was very
keen to see pilots scoring points on the international stage for this.
We had a great turnout, with 29 pilots registered over the 2
days; a combination of old hands & many who were dipping their toes into
the competition scene for the first time.
With a light northerly on Saturday morning, we headed to
Dills. Jeff & Reuben jumped in the air quickly to give it a bit of a test.
They stayed up, so we thought we could be on to something. The boys top landed,
and we got down to business. The task committee of Jeff, Cameron and Johnny
decided we would launch from Dills, then head south to a new waypoint, JnK
House.
Reubs was the first to launch, and when he started to get
high, another group of pilots decided to join him. It was not to last, though.
After a couple of hours of ridge soaring, it was clear that the day was not
going to switch on for us. Everyone in the air top landed, and we made a call
to stop the task so we could get on with Johnny’s sausage sizzle.
Sunday conditions were similar, so we agreed to meet
directly on launch at Dills. The task was the same – head south to JnK House.
Again, no one was able to get up and away, but had a very social time soaring
the ridge. The bomb-out saw a fair bit of action as well. Eventually we had a
back wind, and felt a few drops of rain from those dark clouds we’d been
